The decree entered into force on 1um November 2021. It now it forces motorists to travel in some municipalities to have winter tires (or 4 seasons), or to have anti-slip devices in the boot that allow you to circulate on the snow. And this, in a period from 1um November to March 31st of each year, starting from the year 2021. In 2022 the provision is therefore in application.
If the main goal of this law is to make the roads safer and avoid monstrous traffic jams caused by a few unequipped vehicles, some drivers may feel like they have to go to the checkout again. Today we will detail who is interested, how to equip yourself and what you risk not doing.

Where does this law of the mountain apply? I’m worried?
All vehicles are affected (passenger cars, utility vehicles, camping suitcases, trucks, coaches and buses), with the exception of cars without a license and two-wheelers.
The Law of the Mountains mainly concerns the inhabitants of areas considered mountainous (Alps, Corsica, Massif Central, Jura Massif, Pyrenees, Vosges Massif), but also applies to those who can go there for work or leisure between November and March of the current year. With the end of year holidays approaching and in anticipation of the winter ones, it is therefore necessary to equip yourself and know the laws.
They are the prefects who define, department by department, the municipalities covered from this equipment obligation. Gradually, new signs will also appear to indicate that you are entering an area subject to the Law of the Mountain.
However, some transit or relief routes may have exceptions (also defined by the prefect). So remember that in general, if you are in these regions, you will need to be in good standing.
How to equip your car to be compliant?
If you already live in a mountainous region, it’s a safe bet that you’re already equipped accordingly. The provision is therefore aimed primarily at motorists from the suburbs of these areas and at tourists.
To be compliant, you must have:
- Or tires suitable for winter conditions : winter or “4 seasons” tires
- Or a removable anti-slip device (metal chains or fabric snow socks)
How to choose tires or anti-slip devices?
For motorists who live in geographical areas where the winter climate is rather mild, and whose need to travel to mountainous areas is only occasional, the anti-skid device to keep in the boot seems the most relevant solution.

Two choices are therefore possible for removable devices, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. The models we recommend are good references, suitable for most vehicles.
- Metal chains are stronger and more efficient, but more complicated to install.
- Textile chains (also called snow socks) are easier to fit, but have a short lifespan and less effective in heavy snow.
You must be able to equip the drive wheels of your car with chains or socks, then at least be able to equip the two front or rear wheels depending on the model of your car. If in doubt, do not hesitate to inquire beforehand!
Our tip for this piece of equipment: train yourself to install it at home, so that you get to grips with the exercise before having to do it in often unfavorable conditions. If you are comfortable with handling, you will do everything thoughtlessly and better protect yourself from an accident.
For all other motorists, our recommendation is to adopt winter tires (or 4 seasons). Winter tires are actually more efficient as soon as temperatures drop below 7°C, as well as in the rain – are not reserved for snowy episodes. They will allow you to reduce braking distances and have better road holding (less risk of aquaplaning).
All-season tires are a compromise between winter and summer tyres, which saves you from having to change tires twice a year.
To be compliant, tires must have an “M+S” on the sidewall and preferably the 3PMSF (3 Peak Mountain Snow Flake) marking symbolized by a 3 peak mountain with a snowflake.

If you drive a lot, never neglect your tiresI’m your only contact with the ground.
What are the risks if you are not equipped?
To accompany this new measure, the government has decided not to sanction the first winter of application. He contented himself with references to the law and to teaching.
On the other hand, from 1um November 2022, checks begin. The amount of the fine corresponds to a fine of 4th lesson for €135. That said, the government has extended the grace period and in 2022, law enforcement will be responsible for prevention, as UFC Que-Choisir reminds us.
In the meantime, the risks are those of an accident, so don’t necessarily wait to be forced by a fine to equip yourself. For your safety and that of other road users!
