Free condoms for 18-25 year olds: good news?

Condoms will be available free of charge to 18-25 year olds from January 1, 2023, Emmanuel Macron announced. A salutary announcement in the face of the increase in sexually transmitted diseases in this age group.

Emmanuel Macron presented it as a ” little revolution in prevention ”: from 1 January 2023 condoms will be available free of charge in pharmacies for young people aged 18-25. He took advantage of his visit to the National Council for the Refoundation (CNR) dedicated to youth health in Fontaine-le-Comte in Vienne to make this official announcement.

Free condoms for 18-25 year olds: good news?

Unfortunately the measure does not seem to apply compared to external condoms (often called masculine). As for this age group, all in all quite limitedwe wonder how it was decided…

In fact, it was already possible to get condoms for free

Indeed, it was already possible to get 60% reimbursed condoms by health insurance (the rest could be covered by supplementary health insurance), regardless of age, having them prescribed by a doctor.

In addition, it is also possible to find free external and internal condoms available in many places, in particular at HIV fight associations, sexual health centres, medical-social centres, treatment centres, screening centres, but also in local missions, as well as in nurses at schools, community centers and MJCs.

However, further facilitate access to means to protect themselves and their partners can only be good for public health.

A welcome and above all awaited announcement, as Pascal Pugliese, president of the national coordination for the fight against HIV and STIs in the Paca region, explained to France Info. He recalls the increase of STIs among young people, in particular due to the lack of information on the means of screening, but also on the ways of transmission of HIV and STIs: “There are also differences in the exposure of young people to the risk of sexually transmitted diseases depending on their sexual practice and their social status. For example, the HIV epidemic is not controlled among men who have sex with men. And then, economically disadvantaged young people resort less frequently than others to screening and treatment for STDs, as well as certain vaccinations such as that against HPV (Papillomavirus). »
