Pop superstar and songwriter Neil Diamond, who retired from touring in 2018 after being diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, surprised audiences on the opening night of A beautiful sound Sunday with a post-show performance of his signature hit “Sweet Caroline.” (See below.)
Diamond was greeted with a standing ovation when he entered the Broadhurst Theater just before the start of the musical, which chronicles his life and showcases his music. But the big surprise came after the curtain, when he got up from his box and, microphone in hand, began the instantly recognizable lyric “Where it started…”.
Watch the video of the performance below.
Diamond was joined at the show by his wife Katie and, according to the musical’s narrator, by more than 40 family members, including children and grandchildren. The surprise performance of “Sweet Caroline” was Diamond’s first performance in his hometown of New York since 2017.
