Buckingham Palace disavows one of its honorary members accused of racist comments

Where are you from? That’s the question Lady SH kept asking one of the Buckingham Palace guests, who she apparently couldn’t believe was English.

At Buckingham Palace, you don’t mess with racism. On Wednesday November 30, on Twitter, Ngozi Fulani, CEO of Sistah Space, recounted the racist behavior of one of the honorary members of Buckingham Palace towards him. The exchange would have taken place during a reception organized the day before by the queen consort, inside the British royal palace. Coming to represent the charity she runs, which specializes in supporting women of African and Caribbean descent experiencing domestic and sexual abuse in the UK, Ngozi Fulani recounts how Lady SH questioned her British identity, constantly putting her off the question : “Where are you really from?”.

Racism, not clumsiness

This is sadly the question that many non-white people are still being asked to answer. Under the pretext of skin color or features, their nationality or “real origin” is questioned. Remember if necessary that it’s not clumsiness, it’s racism, period. This is exactly what Ngozi Fulani describes, a black woman born in Hackney, a London district. Her interlocutor asked him alternately about her ” where are you from ? “then “Which part of Africa are you from? »before asking her about her nationality, when the latter had already replied that she was British.

Buckingham condemns these remarks

According to the American channel Cnn, Sista Space has stated on behalf of its CEO that it does not want to reveal the name of the person behind this racist interrogation. “There’s no point in naming and shaming her, it would make us just as bad,” she explained, adding that it’s “the system that needs to be fixed.” But British media say they have identified Lady Susan Hussey, the late Queen Elizabeth II’s lady-in-waiting for more than 60 years and godmother to Prince William. Buckingham Palace meanwhile reacted to Ngozi Fulani’s revelations by calling Lady SH’s remarks “unacceptable and deeply regrettable”, saying she had been removed from office.
