Jon Batiste will perform at the White House state dinner for French President Emmanuel Macron this week.
Batiste was band leader and musical director of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert until he left earlier this year. His successor was Louis Cato.
Thursday’s state dinner will be the first hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden, as social engagements have been postponed due to Covid. Vanessa Valdivia, the first lady’s press secretary, confirmed the appearance.
Batiste won five Grammys this year, including Album of the Year for We are.
The Bidens returned to the tradition of emphasizing art. Last year, they brought the PBS series In Performance back to the White House and also attended the Kennedy Center Honors by attending the ceremony and hosting a White House reception beforehand. Biden also recently announced the revival of the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, an advisory group that has been dormant since the Trump administration. In early fall, Biden hosted Elton John for a performance on the South Lawn and presented him with the National Humanities Medal.
