Qatar 2022: Sandrine Rousseau criticizes the lack of courage of the French team

A guest of France Info, MEP Sandrine Rousseau called the players of the French national team “cowards” and regretted their lack of commitment and their reluctance on the question of human rights in Qatar.

It is likely that uttered by another public figure, the little phrase would not have been picked up so much by all the media. But, as often happens, what Sandrine Rousseau says or does does not fail to be commented. And qualify the French team as “cowards” in the middle of the World Cup is obviously no exception to the rule. A perfect opportunity to bring her back to the box of the relaunched and feminist “mood breaker”of the one who wants us to give up all the pleasures of life.

After claiming he was boycotting the competition on the set of Info France this Monday, November 28, he did not hesitate to declare it “The French team is among those that lack the most courage”.

“Are they cowards? » insists Gilles Bornstein, surely aware that he has an opportunity for a good punchline and to extend the stick: “They are cowards”confirms Sandrine Rousseau.

“Yes, I would have liked the French team to show courage and yes, today they are cowards”he argued, before adding:

“Team Denmark, Team Germany have made very strong gestures and shown solidarity with the people who have been discriminated against in Qatar and it’s good that they have. And FIFA does not set the tone for political gestures related to human rights. »

A French team disconnected?

Recall that when Blues captain Hugo Lloris sides with Fifa by refusing to wear the One Love armband, Mannschaft posed for his pre-match photo covering his mouth on Nov. 23 to denounce the silence enforced by the ball’s high authority roundabout.

As for the Danes, they had initially thought of wearing a training shirt with the inscription “Human Rights for All”, before being banned, still not Fifa, which deemed it too politically connoted. And these are just a few examples, given that the United States, Australia and the Netherlands have taken firm positions on the protection of human rights, through the situation of LGBTQI+ people in Qatar, but also that of migrant workers enslaved for the construction of various stadiums. Without forgetting the courage of the players of the Iranian team, silent during their anthem, as a sign of solidarity with the victims of the repression.

Facing a French team whose captain sees homophobia as part of folklore, these few gestures highlight a form of discrepancy between the Blues. And few people dare to point this out.
