EO Filmmakers on Why a Donkey Is Their Star: Not “Oh, Another Movie About Cats” – Rivals LA

Husband-and-wife team Jerzy Skolimowski and Ewa Piaskowska, the writers and producers of Deadline Contenders Movie: Los Angeles, drove audiences crazy with their charming back-and-forth banter. The couple behind E.O Attended Saturday’s event via video and discussed their decision to make a film from the perspective of a donkey.

“We decided that we weren’t going to follow the film’s traditional linear storytelling,” Skolimowski said. “We were fed up. So many movies have been made with the three act structure and linear narrative where you have to tell the story from A to Z… and within the rules of the three act structure. … Let other people make these films according to these rules.

A film from the perspective of a Polish circus donkey might make you pause for a moment, but E.O has already won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival and the Sideshow & Janus Films production is Poland’s entry in the Oscar race for Best International Feature Film.

The concept did not start with donkeys. Skolimowski and Piaskowska knew they wanted a zodiac sign, but weren’t sure which animal it should be. “We have to avoid the first reaction, ‘Oh, another movie about cats,'” Skolimowski said.

It was all in his eyes, he added: “We were struck by the appearance [the donkey’s] Eyes… big with that very specific melancholic look.” They realized that the same shots would reinterpret the situation from the animal’s perspective and recreate everyday objects and situations.

And director Skolimowski knew this was the quality he wanted to explore. “The eyes give you the answer,” he said.

Check back Monday for the panel video.
