A British pensioner arrested in Cyprus over the death of his sick wife will no longer face murder charges after a deal was reached with Cypriot prosecutors, a group working with his lawyers has said. said.
David Hunter (75) is charged with the murder of his wife Janice (74), who died in December 2021 at the couple’s retirement home in the coastal town of Paphos, where many British expats live in Cyprus.
Justice Abroad, which helps people navigate foreign legal systems, said the parties told the Paphos Court of Assizes during a hearing on Friday that the facts of the case had been agreed and that Mr. Hunter will bring a manslaughter charge in December.
They said they were now confident that the legal action would lead to Mr. Hunter is released from prison and can return home after the next hearing.

The organization said it was working with Cypriot lawyers Nicoletta Charalambidou and Ritsa Pekri to help Mr Hunter, a former Northumberland miner.

“At the next hearing, David’s strong mitigating factors, such as his good character and his long and loving relationship with his wife, will be brought to justice.
“Given the specific facts of this case and the jurisprudence in similar cases around the world, we hope that the court may consider suspending the final judgment.

The couple were married for 46 years before Janice died. They moved from Ashington in Northumberland to Cyprus after their retirement in 2002
Earlier this year, Mr. Hunter’s daughter Lesley said her mother had “begged him for a long time (to help her through her death) and was very clear about what she wanted.”
Justice Abroad said Ms Hunter had terminal blood cancer.
