Barack Obama visits The Daily Show after a wild political week to talk midterm elections, young voters, democracy and stand-up: Watch the full interview

President Barack Obama was a guest The Daily Show with Trevor Noah tonight, after a busy week after the midterms in politics in which Democrats retained control of the Senate, Republicans won a majority in the House of Representatives, Donald Trump announced a third round of the White House elections, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi has announced that he will not run for a leadership role in the next Congress.

The former POTUS touched on these issues, and one of the quotes was broad but insightful: “Democracy, by definition, requires getting along with people who disagree with you,” he said.

Obama also saluted the young voters who made 2022 a temporary anomaly after a much lower turnout in 2014.”[Donald] Trump comes in and all of a sudden in 2018, 2020 and now this, you see young people coming in and they usually vote 70 to 30, 60 to 40 Democrat to Republican — and that makes a big difference. So their enthusiasm really drove this choice forward.”

Noah’s opening volley was a good chip that bounced off him. “By the way, do you miss your name?” he asked. “Because all the ‘Mr. President”, but I feel like when people say “Mr. Daily: “I will miss just being called Trevor.

POTUS 44 replied with a smile: “You know, my best friends call me Barack – you’ll call me ‘Mr. President.’

The interview ended with Obama telling Noah who was going The daily show next month: “You’re already taking advice I got — you’re leaving while your poll numbers are high.” The host then suggested that Obama should participate in his upcoming stand-up tour. “I mean, I’ve told you this before: whether it’s the White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Georgia when you gave the speech, you’re a very funny guy.”

POTUS interrupted, “So you want me to open up for you?”

“Not even openly,” Noah replied. “I wouldn’t even dare.” He suggested they could do “co-headlines”, adding: “We’re calling it Half & Half.”

It was Obama’s third visit to the show hosted by Noah after a virtual performance in 2020 and a White House performance in 2016, which was one of the last televised interviews of his presidency.
