Inclusion of abortion in the Constitution: towards a consensus between TFI and Renaissance groups?

Faced with the text of La France Insoumise which will be presented in committee this week and debated on November 24, the Renaissance group has indicated that it will vote in favor of the proposal presented by Mathilde Panot.

The telenovela of the constitutionalization of the right to abortion continues.

France Insoumise will take advantage of her parliamentary niche and present a proposal to include the right to abortion as a fundamental right in the Constitution. On Thursday 24 November, the group chaired by the deputy Mathilde Panot will have control over the agenda and will therefore be able to anticipate the texts. Among the twelve that will be on the table, one will concern the right to abortion and its inclusion in the Constitution.

LFI is not the only political formation to have positioned itself on the protection of the right to abortion. The Renaissance group has also presented a proposal, again supported by its group president, Aurore Bergé, which will have to be debated in the hemicycle on 28 November. Last week, it was one of his amendments adopted by the law committee that generated some concern because of its wording, to put it mildly, excluding trans men, who are nonetheless concerned about the protection of their sexual and reproductive rights. There is a significant difference between the two proposals as LFI’s intends includes the right to abortion and the right to contraception.

Renaissance deputies should vote for the text brought by the Nupes, despite these few differences in content. So said the entourage of Aurore Bergé in JDD extension. The end of a skirmish that had lasted since the filing of Roe v Wade, which had prompted both groups to react to guarantee the right to abortion after this unprecedented step back across the Atlantic?

The RN will not vote to constitutionalize abortion

It will probably not be necessary to count on the voices of the national group Rassemblement (but is it a surprise?), given that Marine Le Pen recalled this November 13 in the JDD extension his position on the matter, namely thatconsiders it superfluous to carve the right to abortion in stone : “We are not the United States. No political party in France is calling for the abolition of this right. I don’t quite understand what danger this request for constitutionalisation must pose. »

An unsurprising position by the president of the RN group in the Assembly, which we know has some deputies openly committed against abortion, such as Laure Lavalette.

In summary, if the far-right in the hemicycle is not working hard to question abortion rights right now, he doesn’t even show a desire to protect this right.

Yet nothing is decided on the outcome of this constitutional bill presented by LFI and which should be supported by Renaissance. Unless the government seizes it (it would then become a bill), it will have to be put to a referendum after being adopted by the National Assembly and the Senate.
