The Slovenian presidential election took a historic turning point on 13 November. From now on, it is no longer a head of state who leads the country.

Natasa Pirc Musar was elected President of the Republic of Slovenia on Sunday 13 November, becoming the first woman to hold this office in the Alpine country. Before her election, Natasa Pirc Musar was not known for her political feats of arms, but for her duties as a television presenter, then, for her skills as a lawyer, a profession which she later practiced. Since opening her own firm in 2016, she has notably represented former US first lady Melania Trump, of Slovenian descent. The new Slovenian president is not affiliated with any party, but she describes herself as a “liberal”. In Slovenia, the Presidency of the Republic is a rather ceremonial position. It is the president of the government, currently Robert Golob, who ensures the government of the country. But Natasa Pirc Musar does not intend to act like a green plant. “The president can’t be neutral, he has to have an opinion,” she said during her campaign, saying she intended to embody “moral authority.” Its inauguration is scheduled for December 23.
