Midterm 2022: Mark Kelly named winner of Arizona State Senate seat; Democrats one seat away from Senate control, Nevada undecided

Mark Kelly was elected to the Arizona State Senate for a full six-year term. The incumbent’s narrow victory brings the Democrats a decisive step closer to further control of the upper chamber.

Three days after the midterm elections, CNN, NNC and others said the former astronaut, who was elected to the Senate in a special election in 2020, was on track to defeat Republican challenger Blake Masters at John McCain’s former home. The race for governor of Arizona is still too short, but Democrat Adrian Fontes has now been declared the winner for the crucial position of secretary of state over self-proclaimed oath-keeper Mark Finchem.

Kelly’s seat was widely regarded as one of the most fragile of any sitting Democratic administration.

“It’s a disaster, it’s a big mess trying to unscramble these ballots,” GOP nominee Masters told Fox News’ Tucker Carlson tonight about the spin on Kelly and some minor irregularities and tables in Maricopa County . The Republican National Committee raised further doubts about the Arizona vote, claiming that there were “deep errors” in Maricopa County vote counting:

Of course, votes are still being counted in Nevada, where Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV) and Republican Adam Laxalt are almost terrified. Laxalt now leads with 55,000 votes remaining and less than 900 votes between the two

If Cortez Masto wins, Democrats will have at least 50 seats, as they have in the past two years, with Vice President Kamala Harris leading the way and retaining her Senate majority. If Cortez loses to Masto, Democrats still have a chance to retain control in the Georgia runoff on Dec. 6, when Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) opposes Republican Herschel Walker.

Kelly, the husband of former Rep. Gabby Giffords, has been a top recipient of campaign funds from the entertainment industry, raising nearly $620,000 as of the end of last month, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. Just Sen. Warnock (D-GA) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) got more from the industry.
