Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brueckner claims German police are fighting to charge him with multiple crimes in the hope he will snap and confess.
Brueckner (45) is already serving a seven-year sentence for a rape he committed in Portugal in 2005.
He said the police tried to get him to confess to a number of other crimes so he could escape “from this mental torture”.
Brueckner spent many years in Portugal, including in the coastal town of Praia da Luz around the time of Madeleine’s disappearance there in 2007, but denies any involvement and has not been charged – although he is still being investigated on suspicion of her murder.

In a letter from prison made available to The Mirror, the convicted German rapist wrote: “There is no proof whatsoever that I committed any of these crimes. No DNA, nothing.
“The prosecutor’s office is trying to set a trap for me, hoping that I will capitulate under the mental pressure.
“They hope I’ll just say ‘yes’ to anything that gives me a chance to escape this mental torture.”
German prosecutor Hans Christian Wolters said Maddie was dead and he was “100% sure” Brueckner was to blame.
He said investigators were working “exclusively” on the study.
Brueckner last month was charged with a string of sex crimes last month – but none of them related to the British girl’s disappearance.

Brueckner was named by the German police two years ago as the man responsible for Madeleine’s kidnapping in May 2007 in a brass band that attracted worldwide media attention.
As of last month, no charges had been brought and the inquest had not positively linked him to Madeleine, despite the heartbreaking news that prosecutors had “concrete evidence” that the little girl was dead and that Brueckner was to blame . was before.
On October 11, German investigators accused him of five crimes between 2000 and 2017 while Brueckner traveled between his native Germany and Portugal.
These include the rapes of two unidentified women in Portugal, the rape of a 20-year-old Irish woman in 2004, the sexual abuse of a 10-year-old German girl in April 2007 on a Portuguese beach – close to where Madeleine had just disappeared has. a month later – and another case of sexual abuse in 2017, again in Portugal.
Brückner’s lawyer Friedrich Fulscher said the new charges came as a “complete surprise” to him and his client and were based on “dubious witnesses and video evidence that nobody could find.”
The charges related to the rapes of the two unidentified women come after police were alerted to a videotape of Brueckner allegedly assaulting them.
Helge Busching and Manfred Seyferth – two key witnesses and former friends of Brueckner – reportedly stole the camera with the recording from the German’s home near Praia da Luz on the Portuguese Algarve coast.
In the photos that have since disappeared, they describe how an older woman and a young girl were raped by a man they identify as Brückner.
Brueckner is now charged with five counts of sexual assault in the same area where Maddie disappeared in 2007. He was named as the prime suspect in her disappearance, but was not charged
The charges against Brueckner include an alleged rape between December 28, 2000 and April 8, 2006 of an unknown woman between the ages of 70 and 80.
He allegedly tied the woman up and raped her in the bedroom of her holiday home, beating her with a whip while filming her ordeal.
On another day, between the same dates, he is accused of similarly raping an unidentified 14-year-old German-speaking girl at his home in Praia da Luz, allegedly tying her up and videotaping the act.
In June 2004, the accused allegedly gained access to the apartment of a then 20-year-old woman from Ireland via the balcony in Praia da Rocha. The sleeping woman was then woken up and raped by the masked suspect with a knife.
The suspect also apparently filmed large parts of the attack with a video camera he brought with him.
In April 2007, the accused allegedly attacked a 10-year-old German girl who was playing with only shoes and was otherwise naked on Salema beach in the Portuguese district of Faro. He allegedly forced her to watch him perform a sexual act.
Ten years later, he said he committed a similar crime against a girl in a playground in Bartolomeu de Messines, Portugal. Prosecutors say the girl ran to her father for help and the suspect was immediately arrested by Portuguese police.
Under German law, German citizens accused of criminal offenses in other states can be tried in their own country.
Investigators believe the 45-year-old also killed the then three-year-old Madeleine after abducting her from a holiday apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal on May 3, 2007. However, he was not charged with her disappearance.
Brueckner, who has reportedly denied any involvement in the case, was identified by Portuguese officials as a suspect in the McCann case in June 2020.
