The British will be “very worried” their government’s positions on abortion, warns Annaliese Dodds. According to the British newspaper The independent, the leader of the Labor party went to dig into the archives to find the votes of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his cabinet during the abortion debates. The results are chilling.
Globally, the main members of the new government, which took office on 25 October, have taken a majority position against measures aimed at expanding access to abortion o abstained from participating in key votes on termination of pregnancy.
Against the buffer zones
MP Dodds noted that Rishi Sunak, new Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Foreign Minister James Cleverly and Interior Minister Suella Braverman have either abstained or voted against all abortion laws in England since 2015. Among these, the proposal to establish ” buffer zones ”around abortion clinics to prevent the presence in the immediate vicinity of protesters against abortion. This is to protect women who wish to have an abortion. However, this measure was adopted in October 2022, having the deputies voted by a majority in its favor.
Against abortion at home
Same opposition to measures that allow early medical abortion at home. Faced with the constraints imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic, the ministers at the time authorized, in March 2020, the sending by post of abortion pills to be taken at home after a telephone consultation. According to Annaliese Dodds, more than a third of the current cabinet voted against the continuation of this measure. However, she too was adopted in August 2022.
Finally, the Labor president also alerted Maria Caulfield to the post of minister for women, which she found extremely worrying. He points out that Caulfield is a former member of the pro-life parliamentary group and that he voted against the legalization of abortion in Northern Ireland (legalized in October 2019). “Women’s right to abortion is suppressed in other parts of the world “, Alert Annaliese Dodds. “ Rishi Sunak must be very clear that these rights are not threatened by his government in this country. “
