‘Chokehold’: Quentin Tarantino criticizes Marvel movies

Quentin Tarantino shared his disdain for superhero movies and criticized the “suffocation” they have in the modern film industry.

The director compared the plethora of superhero movies directed by the multibillion-dollar Marvel franchise to the studio musical boom of the 1960s. Recalling how delighted Hollywood auteurs were when the studio musical was in decline, Tarantino said that modern filmmakers “look forward to the day when they can say the same for superhero films.”

“The analogy works because it’s like drowning,” Tarantino told the Los Angeles Times. However, he noted that the end of this genre is not yet in sight.

Tarantino said, “All is not lost, it was like in 1969, ‘Oh my God, we invested a lot of money in something nobody cared about.’

The director was then asked why he didn’t direct the Marvel movie himself, although a number of respected producers including Ryan Coogler, Chloe Zhao and Sam Raimi have worked on it in the past. “You have to be an employee to do these things,” Tarantino said. “I am not an employee. I’m not looking for a job.”
