Research on endometriosis is progressing. On October 19, the medical journal Acta Obstetricia e Gynecologica Scandinavica published a study conducted by Chinese researchers. Dedicated to evaluating the effects of alcohol and caffeine on the results of in vitro fertilization (IVF), he also allowed to observe the aggravating effect of alcohol on endometriosis. In France, between 1.5 and 2.5 million women are affected by this chronic gynecological disease, or 10% of French women of childbearing age, according to the Ministry of Solidarity and Health.
Even wider consequences
Interviewed by the newspaper The independent, Dr. Yufen Li, co-author of this study, explains the correlation between alcohol and endometriosis: alcohol consumption produces the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In large quantities, these ROS would in turn increase the aggression against the cells of our organism, also called oxidative stress. It is this factor that would contribute to endometriosis, but also to polycystic ovary syndrome, unexplained infertility, miscarriage and recurrent miscarriages. According to this study, for 84 grams of alcohol per week, or the equivalent of 7 drinks, women’s fertility would decrease by 7% and 9% for men.
