“A huge and horrible circus”: Tim Burton will no longer work with Disney

Tim Burton received the 14th Lumière Prize at the Lyon Lumière Festival. The opportunity to take stock of his career and to return to his relationship with Disney, which he did not fail to address.

It is difficult to choose your favorite film in Tim Burton’s filmography. To celebrate his career, the Lumière Festival presented his prestigious award to the director, on October 22, in Lyon. On occasion the event, the latter spoke of his ties to Disney.

“I needed to escape”

This is an important moment in Tim Burton’s career, including the director in the prestigious line of Prix Lumière holders, including Jane Campion (2021), the Dardenne brothers (2020) and Francis Ford Coppola (2019). During the Lumière Festival, the master of gothic cinema accounts settled with Disneystudio with which he has been collaborating regularly since the early 1980s.

In a master class broadcast by DeadlineTim Burton said:

“My story started with them. I have been recruited and fired several times in my career because of them. It is with the Dumbo movie that I realized my days at Disney were overWhy I had become Dumbo : I worked on this huge and horrible circus of which I had need to escape. Finally, this film is quite autobiographical from my point of view. “

His next film “will make sense” to him

Without the collaboration between Disney and Tim Burton, Mr. Jack’s Strange Christmas, Frankenweenie or Alice in Wonderland he may not have seen the light of day, but the director seems determined to move on.

Instead Wednesdayits eight-part series will be released in less than a month on Netflix (we expect it for November 23), the director assured that he is not done with the cinema, saying: “I want to be sure that the next film I make will really make sense to me”.
