CNN Films released the first trailer for the film Navalny, Russian director Daniel Roher’s featured documentary about Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and premiered on CNN on April 24. The cable press release will air the service with a limited commercial break at 9pm ET / 6pm PT. Check out the full trailer above and the new poster below.
Navalny, Which was a secret screening at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, is dedicated to the Russian anti-corruption government leader and former presidential candidate who survived an assassination attempt two years ago after being poisoned by a deadly nerve agent.
“Come on, poison?” Navalny says in the trailer. “Truly?”
In August 2020, a social media video was posted of Navalny circling in pain on a commercial airliner as the crew and anxious companions tried to help. Roher portrays viewers of what happened beyond the following alarming world headlines: a heated argument between Navalny’s wife and the local Russian hospital first team over her care; the emergency medical evacuation of Navalny in Germany; And Germany’s extraordinary claim that Navalny was poisoned by a Russian government-linked nerve agent called Novichok.

After several months of recovery, Navalny makes shocking discoveries about the conspiracy and decides to return home. Despite the risks to his personal safety, he voluntarily returned to Russia on January 17, 2021 and was arrested minutes after landing in Moscow. He stays there in prison.
The film takes on even more urgency in the wake of the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, a border country it invaded in February.
“Especially as Americans try to understand the broader context of the tragic events in Eastern Europe, we can deliver Navalni “For television and television audiences,” said Courtney Sexton, senior vice president of CNN Films.
Sexton and CNN Films executive producer Amy Entelis co-produced the documentary with Maria Pevchich from the Anti-Corruption Foundation. It is produced by Odessa Rae of RaeFilm Studios, Diane Becker and Melanie Miller of Fishbowl Films and Shane Boris of Cottage M.
Navalny It will also be available to stream April 24 on CNN +.
