About the attitude to the series “Inventing Anna”
“I just looked for half an hour, I didn’t see it anymore. I spend all my time here in Orange County Penitentiary. And it seems to me that some episodes, I don’t know, of course, this is a more theatrical version of my story. The topic was inspired by my story, so not everything is shown conclusively. And it’s a fun series, so it should be perceived. This is not a documentary.”
About participation in the filming of the series
“I didn’t read the script or make any edits. I served as a consultant. They sent me questions, I answered them, but I did not make creative decisions about the final result.
Why couldn’t I find an investor to implement your project
“I think everybody just goes with the flow in one way or another. Anyone who gives you money wants something in return. And it seemed to me that if I got money from the bank, I wouldn’t feel dependent because the bank would never tell me what to do and how to spend that money. Everyone has their own motivation. It’s hard to go your own way when you’re a person with your own goals.
About why he decided to scam:
“I thought everything would be fine with my project. I can make money and return everything. I didn’t run anywhere without looking back. I had a solution in case everything crashed. I would never get paid to disappear with him. This also applies to my other charges from banks, for example. It was never my intention to leave people without money. In the end, I always had a plan to get them back.”
About prison life (it was always in 7 different prisons):
“I would say prison is a society, but on a smaller scale. What is happening is a great social experiment. Here you meet various people, you need to find a common language with them. You can’t just go. We fell into the same trap. I have never met people like those who live in prison from all walks of life.You learn their stories, to some extent it opens your eyes to many things.
On plans after getting out of jail
“I want to stay here in New York. And no, I wasn’t going to continue the project I designed five years ago (we’re talking about the arts center – editor’s note). This proves that my plans can really come true, only someone else did.
About childhood in Russia:
“It was a small, gloomy town (we are talking about Domodedovo – editor’s note). But there is a good airport. My family also has an apartment in Moscow, but I went to school in Domodedovo. We lived in a small house. I remember when I was a kid I didn’t have a spare minute. I was always in some circles, I studied French, danced, played tennis, went to school. Then he moved to Germany. There were no particularly bright events in my childhood. ”
In future plans:
“I am currently shooting my own documentary. I can’t do much from here but it will definitely be a long term project. It’s a way for me to control what people say about me. You never know when something interesting will happen to you. In the first weeks after I got out of prison, I tried to shoot everything I could. In all my initial conversations with people, I will rent housing. I just documented everything so I could make something out of it.”
