The New York State Department of Public Health today announced the rapid growth of two new Omicron sub-variants in the state, designated BA.2.12 and BA.2.12.1. They are subdivisions of the BA.2 variant and are believed to have a 23% to 27% growth advantage over BA.2, which itself had a 30% growth advantage over the original Omicron.
If these numbers were true, this would make BA.2.12 and BA.2.12.1 the most contagious strains of Covid detected to date. This difference previously belonged to WHO-monitored variant XE, which is probably 10% more contagious than BA.2.
“State health officials have determined that these highly contagious new options are likely to increase the incidence.” according to a New York State press release. By March, BA.2.12 and BA.2.12.1 had increased to over 70% in Central New York and over 20% in the nearby Finger Lakes region. Data for April indicates that the level in central New York is now above 90%.
This increase is accompanied by an increase in the number of cases. At the end of the first week of March, the 7-day average of new cases per day in the state was less than 2,000. Today, it is more than 5,000, according to the New York Times. The total number of new positive cases today; according to State Data, it was 6,546.
The NYT reports that the sub-variants are found in more than 40 countries and in more than 30 states of the United States.
