(Don’t) Read the Soviet papers: Emily Ratajkowski tried on one of the most iconic dresses in fashion history

If you remove the veil of secrecy, then after every new photo of a star is published, fashion editors start to quickly search after the images – they look for belonging to certain brands with a single collar, look for cultural references or go search Telegram. There was no need to start a big Robinsonade with new photos of Emily Ratajkowski. Before us is one of the most recognizable motifs in fashion history.

That is, a newspaper edition of John Galliano’s collection from Christian Dior’s 2000 autumn-winter collection. We believe that the dress does not need a wide entrance. Let’s just mention two interesting facts. The first – in fact, a similar edition was invented by Elsa Schiaparelli. The designer borrowed the idea from Danish fishermen, who wore newspaper hats to protect themselves from the sun, and created a blouse with magazine headlines engraved. Galliano loved to draw inspiration in his collections from the creations of Schiaparelli, which marked the birth of a dress with pages from a non-existent edition of the Christian Dior Daily.

The second fact is that the creation of John’s product was inspired not only by Elsa, but also by the Parisian homeless sleeping on the street with the newspapers. It’s a good joke that Kanye West isn’t an innovator with Yeezy x Gap x Balenciaga garbage bags but we’ll probably just keep quiet. After the newspaper print dress was released, Galliano was accused of aestheticizing poverty. Of course, this did not prevent the product from rapidly moving from the couture collection to the Ready-to-Wear segment.

And all because Galliano was and remains not only a great designer, but also a brilliant showman – his performances have always turned into something like theatrical performances. That is why the newspaper dress ended in a wide rotation of category “A” stars – we recall the episode from the third season of “Sex and the City”, where Carrie Bradshaw in a recognizable image went to an apologetic meeting with Natasha.

And finally, we turn to the image of Emily Ratajkowski. The model preferred a black oversized raincoat in the style of the 90s, zebra print heeled boots and a mini bag, accompanied by a vintage Christian Dior dress with thin straps. The intersection of two accent patterns does not overload the outfit, but, on the contrary, evens out the overall tone due to the adjacent black and white palette. As they say, neither subtract nor add.
