Queen  Premier League Matches Postponed After Elizabeth’s Death

“Premier League clubs paid tribute to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II at a meeting this morning. With honor and respect for her extraordinary life and contribution to the country, this weekend, including Monday night’s game, we honor the Premier League,” the Premier League said in a statement. One round of league matches will be postponed.

The EFL, which represents England’s lower football leagues, said its decision was “in line with the approach the Premier League and FA will take this weekend”.

Football bodies contacted the UK Government’s Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Department this morning. The government’s guidance was that matches cannot be postponed following the Queen’s death during the official mourning period, but sports may want to change the timing of the matches and the day of the funeral this weekend.

England’s major football bodies have decided to postpone all matches this weekend, while many other sports are expected to resume this weekend with cricket, rugby league, golf and horse racing in England.

Queen Elizabeth died yesterday afternoon at her mansion in Balmoral, Scotland. The 96-year-old monarch has ruled since 1952.
