It will be the first test flight of the agency’s Space Launch System (SLS) and of the entire Orion spacecraft that will one day carry a manned crew. Various satellite tests and deployments are part of the mission before returning to Earth and crashing into the Pacific Ocean.

Following this mission, Artemis 2 will fly to the moon with a crew, and then Artemis 3 will have a manned moon landing, the first in five decades since the Apollo program.
