Special: Anne Hathaway praised James Gray for not directing Boy Gloves. Director used Oscar-winning star in his autobiographical film doomsday time It will have its North American premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on Friday.
Hathaway plays Esther Graff, the mother of an increasingly cheeky son, Paul (Banks Repetta), who befriends black schoolboy Johnny, played by Jaileen Webb.
Set in Queens, New York in 1980, amid racial tension and economic inequality, Esther is furious and determined to do what’s best for her son.
Hathaway noted that Gray could “see his own life with very clear, unemotional but compassionate eyes.”
She told Telluride on Deadline that she was completely committed to Gray’s movie vision and was happy “to take away all her charms and play this woman who is honestly overwhelmed, tired and stressed.”
“The boy is not a gloved director,” he said, noting that he was grateful for this.
“Sometimes you’re the best player in the world and sometimes your records are a little harder. “If he’s honest and not having fun, he’ll let you know in his own unique way,” Hathaway said.
When asked to give an example, Hathaway took off her sunglasses, laughed, and defiantly said “No!” gave the answer.
“It’s something that I really appreciate personally and in the context of this world and this character,” he said.
“It took me somewhere and I aspire to be the kind of actor who is committed to the process and truly surrenders to the director, the alchemy and the atmosphere they are trying to create,” he explained.
Hathaway laughed again, commenting, “I think this title is called ‘James Gray is Tough Against the Gamers,’ and I don’t want that because he was incredibly supportive and driven.” A place he knows better than me; Until we’re in a place we know better together.”
When asked which title he would prefer, Hathaway wrote live: “James Gray is a dream director if you’re a hardcore gamer.”
Is Hathaway hard? “I aspire to be a tough player,” she said. “I’m grateful to be here and I’m not yet tempted to go up the exit ramp.”
He considered the issues raised for a moment. It’s Armageddon time. “It was interesting to be in a world where anger was treated so haphazardly and went from being so irritating to explosive in the blink of an eye. “I think it’s something we all accept as a fact of life,” he said.
