The end came abruptly for Serena Williams tonight at the US Open. But he fought to the last point. The question now is whether we’ve seen the last of one of the greatest tennis players of all time.
With the crowd at Flushing Meadows roaring every time Williams takes a shot and groaning when he misses, Williams missed six games in the third set in his game against Croatia-Australia Ajla Tomljanovic. They eventually lost the third set 7-5, 6-7, 6-1.
When Williams finished, he accepted the crowd’s applause and raised his hand to thank his fans. In a post-match interview, he said, “Thank you so much. I tried.” tears”. She also thanked her sister Venus, who was a doubles partner, “she’s the only reason Serena Williams exists.”
“It was a fun ride,” he said as the crowd cheered.
Tomljanovic was gracious in his post-match interview. “I love Serena as much as you do.” He added: “He is the greatest of all time period.”
Williams broke a record 186 consecutive weeks to become #1 in women’s singles and won 23 Grand Slam titles in her long career, the second-highest of all time behind Margaret Court.
Williams apparently left the door open for a possible return at some point. “You never know,” he said.
