This is a new hope in medicine. Researchers from the National Institute of Health and Medical Research (Inserm) and the Lausanne University Hospital Center may have found a solution to improve cognitive functions people with Trisomy 21.
A 20-30% improvement in cognitive functions
Trisomy 21 affects approximately one in 800 births in France. Among the symptoms, patients have to deal with a decline in their cognitive abilities. With age, 77% of them face symptoms close to those of Alzheimer’s disease.
For the first time, researchers may have discovered this hormone treatment able to improve the cognitive functions of people with trisomy 21. Their results were published on September 2 in the journal Science.

A hormone absent in trisomy 21 carriers
According to this study in seven patients with trisomy 21, the injection of a treatment improves their cognitive functions by 20 to 30%. For six months, the hormone GnRH it was injected into their arms every two hours. This hormone is naturally present in the bodyexcept in trisomy 21 carriers.
At the end of the treatment, the patients would demonstrate improved memory and attention, a better understanding of the instructions and a greater ability to orient oneself in space.
