Exclusive: Here is the first official trailer. giantThe latest film by the prolific Kazakh director Adilkhan Erzhanov debuted at the Venice Film Festival.
Written and directed by Erzhanov, the film is about the Kazakh city of Karatas, which has long been ruled by a crime boss named Poshaev. He provides housing and work for the local population, but mercilessly executes anyone who dares to oppose him. It’s a lesson poor Arzu must learn firsthand: his wife Kareena reported the crimes to the police. Arzu is disabled and now she has to raise her little daughter alone. Poshaev takes him under his wing, offering him a guard post at the construction site. Soon Arzu gets a chance to prove his loyalty and becomes Poshaev’s right hand man. But where is Arzu’s true loyalty, to his boss or to the idea of justice?
“Goliath is the story of a small local town. Although it is a microcosm, its rules apply all over the world ”. Erzhanov said about the film. “I always find it interesting to tell a story about power. Mixing folklore and journalism at the same time as I deal with the processes of world politics ”.
Berik Aizhanov, Daniyar Alshinov, Dmitry Chebotarev and Alexandra Revenko take part in the film. Other credits include photography by Aidar Sharipov, editing by Azamat Utyanov, production design by Yermek Utgenov and music by Galimzhan Moldanazar.
The film is produced by Short Brothers’ Serik Abishev and Olga Khlasheva, Alexander Kochnev, Nurasil Jarbasov and Gibrat Sarsenov for Changepoint, Georgy Shabanov for All Media Company and Forest Film.
The film is previewed in the Orizzonti Extra section of Venice. Watch the trailer above.
