Paul Allen’s extraordinary art collection will be sold in the largest auction in history.
The late Microsoft co-founder passed away in 2018, leaving behind a $ 1 billion collection that includes 150 works, including masterpieces by Monet, Renoir, David Hockney and Botticelli.
The auction scheduled for November will be held by Christie’s auction house and all proceeds will go to charity according to Allen’s wishes.
Allen founded Microsoft in 1975 with his childhood friend Bill Gates, but left the company in 1983 after he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He remained on the company’s board of directors until 2000 and founded his own company with his sister Jody to manage his vast investment portfolio and accelerate his philanthropy. In 2010, he pledged to leave most of his fortune to charity, which Gates did.
Christie CEO Guillaume Cerutti said the auction is like no other:
“The inspirational figure of Paul Allen, the extraordinary quality and diversity of the works and the dedication of all proceeds to charity form a unique combination that makes the sale of the Paul Allen Collection an unprecedented event.”
Jodi Allen, the estate’s executor, added of her late brother’s selection of works: “It reflects the diversity of her interests, with her mystique and beauty.”
