‘I didn’t love, I was just a body’: Mena Suvari on abusive relationships, childhood traumas and drugs

Mena Suvari published a memoir last summer in which she made several candid confessions, including that she was sexually abused as a child, resulting in a propensity for drug addiction and toxic relationships. The actor also shared other details about his past by giving a new interview to The Guardian, and also talked about how the readers met his book.
According to Suvari, while working on his memories, he was not thinking of profit, but of the opportunity to talk about what tormented him for years. After the release of the book, the star of the films “American Beauty” and “American Pie” began to receive messages from people who had experienced something similar:
In an interview, Suvari talks about a turning point in her life, which she describes in the book: At the age of 12, she was raped several times by a friend of her brother’s. According to Mena, the man wooed her, sent love letters, and then persuaded her to become close and told everyone at school that she was a “whore.”
The actress was afraid to talk about what happened to adults. Even the doctor she went to for a rape-related bladder infection prescribed birth control pills instead of finding out what was wrong. The actress says:
At that time, Mena began her modeling career, for the sake of casting she moved with her family to Los Angeles. She began to believe that she could only be successful in the industry if she was sexy. Here’s how Mena remembers her first shoot:
Mena realized she likes older men, and it didn’t seem strange to her that photographers asked her to pose nude at 15 and her 30-year-old manager seduced her when she was 16:
Mena’s mother had left the family by that time, the old father already needed care (Suvari was over 60 when she was born). The girl began to use drugs, in addition, she got into an abusive relationship. Her partner constantly humiliated her and forced her into undesirable sexual practices, for example, forcing her to seek women for threesomes. Mena says she is too attached to that man and continues to suppress her pain with drugs:
In 1999, the actress achieved great success – she played a major role in the Sam Mendes drama “American Beauty” and immediately became famous. He says the following about the footage:
To take the next picture, Mena went to another state and finally found the strength to part with the abuser. She soon started a new relationship with cameraman Robert Brinkmann, who is 16 years older than her. The marriage broke up five years later, the second marriage was even shorter: the actress lived with producer Simone Sestito for two years.
She has been married to accessories designer Michael Hope since 2018 and they had a son a year ago. Now Mena is making quite a few films again. Years of psychotherapy help to cope with past traumas. As the star admits, “it’s a daily struggle.”
She’s happy to part ways with the “sexy schoolgirl” that once made her a star. A few years ago, the actress got rid of her breast implants, on her instagram * she often looks without makeup and without a filter:
Mena confesses.
