alberto barbera: I am so happy. It was a long and difficult process. We started watching movies last November. Of course, there were movies that were never finished and we couldn’t buy, but most of the movies I wanted to watch were able to watch and most of them are in the selection. The series is very diverse with filmmakers from all over the world. There are big names, but also new discoveries from developing countries.

Barber: I have no right to pre-judge the quality of the films. However, we are very excited to shoot the movie as it is one of the most anticipated and talked about movies of the last 12 months. Andrew Dominick tried to go to Cannes but failed. I am happy to be able to introduce the film to the world.
TERM: It’s an R-rated movie. Is it as dark as suggested?
Barber: There will be a lot of talk about the movie. This is not a movie that tries to please everyone. He has a unique and strong point of view. I’m very interested in the reaction.
TERM: You’ve had a touch of Midas when it comes to Oscar movies in recent years. Which movies do you think might resonate with Academy voters?
Barber: it’s a number tar Of course. Cate Blanchett is absolutely amazing. It’s a very ambitious movie. Iñárritu remains a competitor poet. Perhaps his most personal and ambitious film to date. A Noah Baumbach movie [White Noise] There is also another contender and son He’ll be at the Oscar speech, I’m sure. i am interested in the answer Blonde, We’ll see. Barber: It can be. We’ll see. It’s hard to see the future, but it’s very possible, yes.
TERM: What are some of the hidden gems in the series?
Barber: I was very surprised by the Alice Diop movie. [Saint Omer]. A small but very powerful movie. Very well made. jafar panahi [No Bears] Absolutely outstanding. This is one of his best movies. Santiago Miter [Argentina 1985] This is perfect. Like the movie Emmanuel Criallese [L’Immensita], here Penélope Cruz stands out. Second Iranian film, behind the wallIt can also be a surprise.
TERM: joyfulYou have another great documentary series…
Barber: Laura Poitras movie [All the Beauty and the Bloodshed] In Competition is the best documentary I’ve seen this year. This is a portrait of Nan Goldin, an underground movie set in 1980s New York, as well as a portrait of the great Sackler family of drugs. Personally, I love the Frederick Wiseman movie. [A Couple] lots.

TERM: Russian filmmakers were not banned this year. Were there presentations?
Barber: We have said before that films supported by the Russian state cannot be screened at the festival. Very few films are coming from Russia this year. I just saw a Russian movie and I liked it a lot, but it was funded by the Russian government, so we couldn’t shoot it.
TERM: As always, there is a solid crop of Italian films. What do you think about the health of the local industry right now?
Barber: The number of mixed Italian products has almost doubled this year. More than 250 films were made that were not common or useful. There are many grants from private investors as well as tax credits and regional authorities. Making a film in Italy today is pretty easy, but it produces quantity rather than quality. We selected some very good Italian movies, but there were also movies of much lower quality than you might expect. there was a mistake [in terms of the number of films made]And most local producers have accepted it.
TERM: You said that there will be various events in honor of Ukraine…
Barber: Yes, we have three Ukrainian films. We haven’t decided exactly what to do, but starting next week we will be discussing options for how to appreciate Ukrainian and Iranian filmmakers.
