Before Amazon decided to go ahead with the development of its own The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power series, several ideas were presented for a series that would be set in Middle-earth.
At first it was rumored that the series would focus on a younger version of Aragorn, and it turned out to be true. That version of a series was considered. JD Paynethe co-showrunner on The rings of powerconfirms this and says that there was also a Gimli series in contention:
“When we first went for work, we were told there were literally dozens of other people who were also throwing their hats in the ring, and they were all coming up with different things. Amazon bought the rights to the trilogy. , the appendices, and The Hobbit. They said the field was wide open – any story within that material could be told. So there were people presenting the Young Aragon show, or the Gimli spin-off, or whatever. kind of things “.
Payne went on to explain that he and Patrick McKay were looking to do something epically ambitious and that’s what led them to want to explore the second era. He said:
“They wanted to create something that was worthy of Tolkien, and because we really thought about it, we selected the material and saw all different kinds of stories: that Second Age story, then the Dark Lord Sauron and the Fall of Númenor, and the fight against Sauron at Mount Doom. That arc of major Second Age events seemed like such an incredible, untold story. “
While it would have been nice to see a young Aragorn or Gimli series, I love the fact that they are exploring the Second Age of Middle-earth! This show looks amazing!
The Lord of the Rings: The rings of power “Is set thousands of years before the events of JRR Tolkien The Hobbit And The Lord of the Rings, and will take viewers back to an era where great powers were forged, kingdoms rose to glory and fell to ruin, unlikely heroes were tested, hope hung by the thinnest threads and the greatest villain to ever come out of the pen by Tolkien threatened to cover the whole world in darkness. Begun in a period of relative peace, the series follows an ensemble cast of characters, both familiar and new, as they face the much-feared resurgence of evil in Middle-earth. From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains, to the majestic forests of the elven capital Lindon, to the breathtaking island kingdom of Númenor, to the farthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters carve out legacies that will survive long after they’re gone. “
The series will debut on Prime Video on September 2, 2022.
