German architectural firm Grüntuch Ernst Architects has transformed an abandoned women’s prison and courthouse into a stylish hotel. Dezeen writes about it.

The Wilmina hotel is located in Berlin’s Charlottenburg district and is housed in two 19th-century buildings that had previously been abandoned for two decades. “Wilmina is a place of natural calm, relaxation and comfort, an oasis in the city centre,” says Grüntuch Ernst Architects. “The unique location and detailed, thoughtful transformation make the ‘forgotten place’ a very special place in Berlin.”

The hotel has 44 rooms, located in a five-story, U-shaped block of former prison cells. A series of narrow windows were widened to give visitors views of the main courtyard, but the prison railings were retained to remind the history of the building.
