Tom Bateman revealed the claustrophobia he experienced while filming the Ron Howard movie. thirteen lives It tells the true story of 12 Thai boys and their coach being rescued from the depths of Tam Luang caves.
Bateman told the BBC how he used meditation to cope with the circumstances and even went underwater at one point during filming.
The British actor plays British diver and computer software consultant Chris Jewell and joins a rescue mission in northern Thailand in June 2018 after children collapse into the mountains after soccer practice. Their condition was followed tirelessly around the world until they were rescued 18 days later by an international team supported by thousands of volunteers.
About filming in Queensland, Australia, directed by double Oscar winner Ron Howard, Bateman told the BBC: “Every day was a challenge for me. I don’t understand how that makes you feel… I’m very claustrophobic and very meditative.’
On one occasion, Bateman was submerged for about seven minutes while performing a show in a narrow passage when he got stuck between rocks.
I remember it was very hot and I thought, ‘I’m underwater but I’m sweating’. All I could see was my heart rate was getting higher and higher [on a pulse monitor].
“But her nice gift was to get over it… it’s all in your head. It was a really safe environment, so getting past the ‘can I do this’ barrier is a small victory every time you do it.”
In addition to Bateman, Viggo Mortensen, Colin Farrell, Joel Edgerton and Paul Gleeson play the role of divers guiding children through narrow passages, and the actors had to repeat the conditions that real divers are subjected to.
“The actors, of course, experienced fear at different times,” Ron Howard told the BBC.
