Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck secretly swore almost 20 years after they broke up! The couple got married at the Little White Chapel in Las Vegas, where only their closest friends and family members attend. How did it go and how did the bride feel? “We did it. Love is beautiful. Love is beautiful. And it turns out that love is very patient. Twenty years of patience! Everything was just as we wanted it to be. We flew to Las Vegas last night, got in line with four other couples to get driver’s licenses, and all the same to the wedding capital of the world. Behind us two men holding hands and hugging each other. Here is a young couple traveling three hours from Victorville for their daughter’s second birthday. Right now we all wanted the same thing – the way the world knew us as partners and through the ancient and almost universal symbol of marriage. proclaiming our love.
We barely reached the small white wedding chapel by midnight. They graciously lingered for a few minutes and let us take pictures in a pink Cabillac convertible.
So, with the best witnesses we could imagine, in a dress from an old movie and a jacket from Ben’s wardrobe, we read our own vows in the little chapel and exchanged the rings we would wear for the rest of our lives. There was even Bluetooth for the (short) wedding walk down the aisle. But in the end it was the best wedding we could have imagined! The one we dreamed about a long time ago and became a reality in the very, very distant past (in the eyes of the state, of Las Vegas, the pink convertible, and each other).
When love is real, all that matters in a marriage is just the two of you and the promise we make: to love, to care, to understand, to be patient and kind. We have it. And more. The best night of our lives. Thanks to Little White Wedding Chapel for letting me use the break room while I change in the men’s room.
Those who say “all you need is love” are right. We are grateful to be in abundance. A wonderful new family of five wonderful kids and a life that doesn’t have to wait. Love is a wonderful thing, perhaps the best, and worth the wait.
