British director Charlotte Wells’ first feature film One year later The 75th Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF), which will be held from 12 to 20 August this year, will open.
In the gritty 1990s drama, Paul Mescal stars as a divorced father who goes on summer vacation to Turkey with his teenage daughter, played by newcomer Francesca Corio.
The film won one of the biggest headlines at Cannes Critics’ Week last May, winning the jury’s new French Touch award.
The Edinburgh show marks a homecoming for Wells, who was born in the city and now lives in New York. In a statement announcing the EIF’s opening space, the filmmaker revealed the role the festival played in its introduction to independent cinema.
“As a teenager, I spent almost all of the money I spend on EIFF tickets each summer sitting on the floor for hours to open the box office at Fountainbridge, reviewing a heavy schedule that gave me my first independence. and international cinema,” Wells said.

The film is produced by Adele Romanski, Barry Jenkins and Mark Ceriak at Edinburgh-based Unified Theory, by Los Angeles-based production companies Pastel and Amy Jackson.
