Updated: Wednesday at 5:14 am: The number of resignations now rises to 18, including that of the Minister of Housing, while pressure continues on the Prime Minister.
Boris Johnson reiterated this morning that he will not step down, despite calls from his party to do so.
Updated Wednesday 01:04: There are more UK undersecretary resignations this morning, most recently Childhood Minister Will Quince, whose resignation came after the new chancellor, Nadeem Zahawi, was interviewed live on BBC Radio Four.
Conservative Party Vice President Bim Afolami also resigned on live British television last night, bringing the total number of resignations to 12 now.
Tuesday before 11:24 am: British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s power was further undermined on Tuesday when two of his top cabinet ministers resigned in protest over allegations of misconduct against the eminent Conservative MP.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Secretary of Health Sajid Javid released their resignation letters within minutes of each other, which could mark the end of Johnson’s term.
Javid wrote: “It is with a heavy heart that I can no longer, in good conscience, continue to serve in this government.
Sunak said the public expects his government to “behave in a fair, competent and serious manner”.
There has been growing condemnation and unrest within Britain’s right-wing Conservative Party over a series of incidents of Johnson’s misconduct within its ranks.
In the latter case, Johnson was forced to apologize for keeping former Conservative Congressman Chris Pincher in his post amid allegations of sexual misconduct.
Javid and Sunak’s resignations are particularly significant as both ministers have remained loyal to Johnson through various scandals.
They replaced Steve Barclay (Health) and Zahavi (Chancellor), while Michelle Donnellan was promoted to replace Zahavi as Secretary of Education.
Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, the architect of Channel 4’s privatization, has remained loyal to Johnson and is said to have met him at 10 Downing Street last night.
