Spoiler alert! Do not read without seeing the season finale. nice weather About the peacock.
It took several seasons for fans to meet Will Smith’s father, Lucy. The New Prince of Bell Air (voiced by Ben Warren). but a peacock nice weather – As already shown in the first 10 episodes – it’s nothing like the ’90s sitcom starring Will Smith.
In the series’ first season finale, Marlon Wayans will appear as Will’s (Jabbar Banks) long-lost father, Louis. Before returning home unexpectedly, Will’s mother Wim (April Parker Jones) and Uncle Phil (Adrian Holmes) believed that Lum had separated from the family; In fact, Lou was in prison and never wanted to see his son behind bars.
Here, co-producers and executive producers Tage Brady and Rashid Newson discuss Willie’s father’s decision to nominate him for the show’s first season (the series has been selected for a second year) and the problems his unexpected appearance brought to the family. . .*
Why did my father introduce the term so early?
brady tag Bel-Air is a complete recreation of Fresh Prince and we didn’t want to delay and meet our expectations. Throughout the season, Will has mentioned several times that he doesn’t have a father and that he grew up without a father and how Uncle Phil played that role. Sometimes he said this to justify his self-harming behavior, sometimes to explain why he kept his distance. We wanted to disappoint the audience’s expectations, to challenge them, to make this man reappear in his life, and to discover that the story he’s been told throughout his life that he’s created an identity isn’t true.
Rashid Newson It had to be stepped up because that’s one of the things that goes with making a sitcom and turning it into a drama. In the sitcom you can uncover the fact that Willie is realizing the rich relationship he hasn’t seen in years. In this, it is necessary to explain why there is this disconnection in the family. The natural question is, should these stories get out? When Willie was 4 years old, his father was convicted of a violent crime and sentenced to prison, and Willie’s mother and Uncle Phil said, “Don’t bring my son here. If you bring him here, I won’t come to see him. I don’t want them to see me like this. I grew up seeing my father in prison and I think it confused me and I don’t want to do that to my son.’ Uncle Phil and Willie’s mom couldn’t tell the 4-year-old that his dad was in jail and didn’t want to see you anymore, so they let him think his dad was gone. They think so now that their father is at the door.
brady tag This is the part that will make everyone’s job harder. When are we going to tell him the truth? Maybe there’s no reason to tell him. One day when he grows up, he could stand it. Seventeen youth and on the verge of adulthood. This was the line they crossed and it goes back to the very end to create a conflict.
NEWS We try to combine what seems understandable in every way. I don’t think they fully understand what they’re doing to Will. In the last two episodes, Will asked if his father was alive. He clung to the idea that he was dead.
Brady One of the deeper things we try to explore with all the characters is identity, how identity is developed and defined and how it can be changed. Will built his identity, particularly in Philadelphia, largely around how the role of mother would add to him as his father was not there and he was not needed.
Deadline but the whole guild exploded.
NEWS Willie escapes and leaves the palace. Lou cannot take responsibility for his contribution to this. He wants to blame a lot of people and causes a huge controversy when he starts swearing at Will’s mother. Willie won’t agree.
Deadline How did you come to Marlon Wayans?
NEWS We knew it would be good but also surprising. Too many people were obvious candidates. But we wanted someone to say to the audience, “Okay, wait a minute.” We wanted it to feel clean. We didn’t want to feel like someone was re-enacting a role in another very similar drama.
Is Vince returning for season 2?
Brady I don’t know if he will be a regular but we hope to see him again.
NEWS As it turned out, Willie and Lou broke up. They are really looking. But Will has to have his father back in his life, but he won’t be living in Los Angeles or any place he sees regularly.
Deadline What do you think of the show’s demographics?
NEWS Interestingly, certain language issues and details are African American, but the broader stories are universal. This is a family story. We decided that adults should always have real, sexual stories that don’t involve dealing with children. Because if you look at the original Fresh Prince audience, they’re my age now. The parents were married. This show wouldn’t have survived if it was just about the love lives of 16-year-olds. We created something for middle-aged people to relate to.
N-words are used in the series and especially in the finale, what kind of discussions were there about this?
NEWSON I can tell you that we counted and reduced the use of N-words in the pilot. It’s the balance of authenticity and also the knowledge that you turn a lot of people away every time you use that word. The rule that emerges is that it can come up in the moment of stress, anger, but not “hey, n words”. You cannot enter the room this way. We let music be music. If this happens in an audio game, a lot of African-Americans are working on this show, and there’s a lot of thought between us. I know the more we start using it and the further we go, the less it gets. The same is true for explanations. We were probably more moderate towards them at the beginning of the season and started to withdraw. This is a show discovery.
