Oscar-winning producer Joseph Patel shared his experiences on Sunday night and punched Will Smith’s host Chris Rock in the face for the Best Documentary Award. In a long Twitter thread, Summer of the Soul (or when the revolution can’t be televised…) The producer described Smith’s actions as “selfish” but avoided harshly criticizing The Rock, which he said was “absolutely stubborn”.
Rock introduced Thompson and the “Four White Boys” when they announced category winner Ahmir “Questlove” with Thompson’s Searchlight photo. Patel, of South Asian descent, tweeted, “Really what ***???? The reason I was so angry was because I was proud to be the only South Asian in history to win an Oscar.
He added: “I’m angry. Will Smith is angry. Angry Chris Rock. He’s mad at me. He’s mad at Amir. I’m mad at my filmmakers. I went home to New York last night and watched a ceremony on my DVR and hadn’t seen it. Probably never. Thanks Chris, you are a real Dicko.
Patel previously wrote that she “was happily drunk” after winning the Oscar, but went on to state that “it took a few days to process everything” and went on to clarify the facts.
“Everything turned upside down when we realized that the Chris Rock/Will Smith interaction was not small. Everyone was still trying to figure it out as Chris was patient and started reading the nominations…that’s what I didn’t hear when I stepped onto the stage, but what Chris Rock said to me later when he read our name on the winning card – winner “Summer of Soul… Ahmir” Questlove “Thompson and… 4 White Boys ”. Really ***????”
Patel said he was “ecstatic” to be the third South Asian to win that night, along with previous Live Action Short winners Reese Ahmed and Anil Karia. Goodbye. “Three South Asians won the same night, it’s never happened before! And it makes sense! This is the date! “
Patel added: “I’m a big kid, I can joke. Comedians are joking. But not right now. How despicable and disrespectful. Look and see… Chris Rock wasn’t under any stress. He made the same joke on the Roots Jam stage last night!”
Patel concluded, “I know what happened at the ceremony and the Oscars will disappear in time… I never need a statue to tell me how good I am, but it really helps. And what both Will and Chris are really thwarting about what should have been a great time for us. FIN.
