Despite an emotional request from Ukrainian political leaders and support from the UK government, next year’s Eurovision Song Contest will not actually take place in the besieged European country.
The European Broadcasting Union (EBU) doubled down on its decision to move next year’s competition from the previous winning country to its traditional location and instead hold it in a second-placed country, namely the United Kingdom.
This statement was greeted with concern by Ukrainian politicians last week, who called for the talks to resume. Leading British politicians, including Prime Minister Boris Johnson, have supported the belief that the competition should take place in a winning country.
Now the EBU says it “understands the frustration” but has other responsibilities in allocating space for a country where the huge event infrastructure is more stable.
The statement states: “The decision was guided by the responsibility of the EBU to ensure that the conditions are met to ensure that all employees and event attendees, the planning of which must begin immediately in the host country. “- It says in the station communiqué.
“At least 10,000 people, including crew, staff and reporters, are usually credited to work in or for the Eurovision Song Contest. Another 30,000 spectators from all over the world are expected to attend the event. Your well-being is our primary concern.
“Therefore, it is important that the decisions that are made live on such a complex event are made by the broadcasters and not politicized”.
The EBU further noted that no other major international concert tour in Ukraine is planned for 2023.
