Wikileaks founder Julian Assange extradited from UK to US
The decision was signed by British Home Secretary Pretty Patel this morning, and Assange has 14 days to appeal.
The Ministry of the Interior said Extradition will not be “contrary to human rights” and will be “treated appropriately” while in the US.
Wikileaks said it was a “black day for British press freedom and democracy” on Twitter, adding, “Julian has done nothing wrong. He has committed no crime and is not guilty. He is a journalist and editor and is being punished for doing his job.”
Assange has been in the UK for the past three years and was arrested for bail breach in April 2019 and detained at HMP Belmarsh, during which time multiple extradition hearings have been held.
The US Department of Justice charged Assange with 17 espionage charges, alleging that the material obtained by Wikileaks was life-threatening. The legal team argued that the confidential documents released by Wikileaks on the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan exposed the crimes of the USA and were in the public interest.
