A new Russian law illegally discrediting the Russian military will lead to the suspension of Spotify’s streaming service.
Spotify Technology SA announced today that it will leave Russia with a new law. Earlier this month, the company closed its offices indefinitely in response to Russia’s unprovoked attack on Ukraine.
“Spotify continues to believe that it is very important to continue providing our services in Russia to deliver reliable and region-independent news and information,” Spotify said in a statement. “Unfortunately, recently enacted legislation, which further restricts access to information, excludes freedom of expression and criminalizes certain types of news, endangers the safety of Spotify’s staff and even the capabilities of our listeners.”
According to a person familiar with the situation, the service is expected to be completed in early April. It has not been detailed how the service will return to its users.
When it closed its offices, Spotify cited employee safety and its role as a news provider. “For Spotify to continue to be a leading global and regional news source at a time when access to information is more important than ever.”
