Warner Bros Discovery appoints Luis Silberwasser to head the sport

Warner Bros. Discovery has appointed Louis Silberwasser, Discovery, Telemundo and, most recently, the former CEO of TelevisaUnivision, president and CEO of its sports division.

As reported by CEO David Zaslav, Silberwasser will lead the company’s internal sports portfolio and oversee a unified global sports strategy. The newly merged company incorporates Discovery’s sporting businesses outside of the United States and assets such as Eurosport, including the Turner Sports internal portfolio and digital brand Bleacher Report. In addition to the Olympic Games, the company is eligible for the NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball and NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

Silberwasser is the president of television. From 2014 to 2018 he was in charge of Telemundo Networks.

Various executive positions have been discussed in recent months, but one aspect of Silberwasser’s origins that Zaslav probably liked was dating. Earlier in his career, the new executive spent 16 years at Discovery, becoming chief content officer of EVP and the company’s international networking division, where his responsibilities included sports. Zaslav served as CEO of Discovery from 2007 until the merger with WarnerMedia, which ended last month.

“I have known Lewis for many years and have great respect for how hardworking she is, how collaborative she is at work and her ability to build highly successful global companies and brands,” Zaslav said in a press release.

“I am thrilled to be joining Warner Bros. Discovery at an exciting and innovative time, especially considering its recently integrated global sports business and the company’s fantastic team, featuring the most compelling talent on the air, production values of world-wide and extended media. “Rights in the world,” said Silberwasser.

Turner Sports President Lenny Daniels and Head of Regional Sports Networks Patrick Kramb will report to Silberwasser. Andrew Georgiou, President and CEO of WBD Sports Europe, will continue his conversation with International President Gerhard Zeiler.

Through Eurosport Networks and its BT Sports joint venture, the company can participate in the Olympic Games, the PGA Tour, the ATP World Tour, as well as cycling, tennis and football matches. Sports rights in Latin American countries include UEFA and various local football leagues. The company’s four sports streaming services include Eurosport Player, which operates in 52 European markets.
