Nothing lasts forever, just not under the moon. The Earth’s satellite suddenly found itself on the list of endangered objects. The celestial object is officially included in the WMF records.
The World Monuments Fund’s WMF watch list generally includes vulnerable cultural sites on Earth. Bénédicte de Montlaur, president and director general of the organisation, said Moon was included on the list due to increased risks due to increased activities.
“Preserving lunar heritage will prevent damage from accelerated private and government activities in space and ensure the preservation of these artifacts for future generations,” Montlaure said.
For example, on Wednesday SpaceX launched two lunar landers to conduct research. It is expected that special flights to the Moon will be made in the near future. This is expected if NASA’s Artemis III mission, planned for mid-2027, successfully lands with a crew.
In addition to the Moon, the list included 24 objects from 29 countries on 5 continents. These include the historical urban development of Gaza, the Turkish city of Antakya damaged by the 2023 earthquake, paved mountain roads in the Andes, the Sorbonne chapel in France, the monasteries in the Drino Valley in Albania, and others.
