If you’ve always wondered what it takes to be cool, a new study lays out the strict criteria. US experts officially developed the dictionary definition of the term after surveying more than 2,000 people.
A tough guy has “external toughness” (consisting of physical strength, “formidable presence,” or both), inner toughness (such as moral fortitude and courage), or both. The Daily Mail includes a link to the study and writes that, according to experts, completely different men and women can be considered cool, from peace activists to fierce warriors.
Particularly famous tough men are said to include Genghis Khan (1162-1227 AD), the brutal founder of the Mongol Empire. He was a prolific lover, the father of hundreds of children in his territory, and some scholars believe he had 16 million living male descendants today.
Other cool people include former boxer Mike Tyson, Pakistani education activist Malala Yousafzai and South African activist Nelson Mandela.
The study was conducted by cognitive scientist Brianna K. Nguyen of Yale University and psychologist Michael Prinzing of Baylor University. “In this article, we explored what people think about what it means to be a tough guy and shed light on what would otherwise be an extremely mysterious concept,” the team said.
When combined with dictionary definitions of the term, the researchers concluded that a troublemaker is someone who is evil, rude, or scary, but also someone who is good, impressive, or admirable. However, Genghis Khan meets the first part of this definition, not the second part; Malala Yousafzai, on the contrary, does not meet the first part but meets the second part.
To provide a more precise definition, the researchers conducted a series of four experiments with participants of different ages, genders, and races. Adjectives that often describe cool include: fearless, loyal, good, self-confident, brave, eager, independent, positive, and capable.
