Mystras hotel owner kept father in freezer, lawyer says

A 55-year-old hotel owner in Mystras who kept his father's body inside a freezer for years acted because of strong emotional dependence rather than financial greed, according to defense lawyer Agis Kokkoros. Speaking to television channel Mega, Kokkoros said the man had an intense emotional dependence on his parents and that pathological love explained his psychological reasons.

The hotel owner continued collecting both his father's pension and his deceased mother's pension while hiding the body inside the hotel. Kokkoros noted that his client now understands the severity of his actions and realizes he should have given his father a proper burial.

Legal charges and evidence

The accused faces misdemeanor charges of continuous fraud, as the total pension money collected did not exceed 120,000 euros. Because of the charge level, he will not appear before an interrogator on Friday but will plead directly to the competent court while remaining in custody.

Kokkoros added that the man was educated, owned property, and had no monetary motive. He noted that he has not yet received a copy of the case file to give a full statement on the case.

Addressing cameras and barbed wire around the hotel premises, Kokkoros said many local homes install similar surveillance systems for protection. He said he will address the issue in detail after studying the case file.
