Renault Megane Planned to Rival Tesla Model Y by 2028

Renault is preparing a major overhaul of the Megane with an electric range of up to 748 kilometres to compete directly against the Tesla Model Y.

Renault Megane Planned to Rival Tesla Model Y by 2028

Renault is redesigning its Megane family car into a high-riding electric vehicle aimed at competing directly with the Tesla Model Y. The French carmaker plans to launch the overhauled model in 2028 with an all-electric driving range of up to 748 kilometres and an optional petrol-assisted range extender reaching 1,400 kilometres.

Digital design renderings published by AutoExpress show that the next-generation Megane will adopt an aerodynamic profile inspired by the new Renault Clio. The styling features a low front section, slim headlamps, modest grille openings, and modern LED lighting, paired with a compact rear intended to reduce drag and maximise range.

Renault is overhauling its mid-size vehicle range with the next-generation Megane set to challenge the Tesla Model Y.

The renewal forms the centrepiece of a wider programme at Renault to overhaul its mid-size vehicle family. The Megane has long served as the French brand's primary entrant in Europe's competitive C-segment family car market. With this new generation, Renault aims to challenge established electric crossover rivals by pairing streamlined aerodynamics with long range.

Powertrain options and driving range

The upcoming Megane is being engineered to support both fully electric and range-extender drivetrains. An all-wheel-drive electric version is stated to provide an estimated 748 kilometres of range. For drivers seeking greater flexibility, Renault is also preparing a range-extender variant, known as a REx. In this configuration, an internal combustion engine acts as a generator to recharge the battery, extending total driving distance to 1,400 kilometres.

A key technical development is the adoption of cell-to-body technology, where battery cells are integrated directly into the chassis to form part of the floor structure. Philippe Brunet, the head of technology at Renault, stated that the car will use a lithium iron phosphate battery pack under 90 kilowatt-hours. Brunet added that engineering teams intend to keep the total vehicle weight below two tonnes.

Lithium iron phosphate, or LFP, battery chemistry has gained popularity across the automotive industry because it relies on cheaper materials and avoids nickel and cobalt. While LFP cells traditionally carry less energy density than rival chemistries, fitting them directly into the floor structure eliminates bulky packaging modules, saving space and preserving passenger room while maintaining structural rigidity.

Autonomous driving platform

Renault is also developing its new RG EV Medium 2.0 platform to support future autonomous driving technology. Brunet explained that because Renault is not a luxury manufacturer, the company must maintain a careful balance between production costs and customer pricing. Despite those boundaries, he noted that steer-by-wire technology, which removes mechanical steering shafts in favour of electronic controls, will be required when transitioning to Level 4 autonomous driving.

The architecture comes as Chinese carmakers prepare to introduce hands-free Level 2++ driving systems to Europe's mainstream market as early as 2028. Renault intends for its platform to support this technology, although the company has not yet clarified the full scope or automated driving rating the production Megane will offer.

Under global engineering standards, Level 2 automated driving requires drivers to supervise the vehicle constantly while steering and speed are managed on highways. Level 4 represents a higher tier of automation, allowing a vehicle to operate independently under defined conditions without requiring human intervention.

Cabin technology and model heritage

Although the design renderings do not reveal the passenger compartment, the interior of the new Megane is expected to draw inspiration from the Renault E-Space concept. The cabin will feature a wide display screen extending across the dashboard. To reduce eye fatigue, the screen will sit close to the windscreen, supported by a secondary touchscreen control display and an advanced voice command system.

The Megane nameplate has been a fixture of the Renault lineup since 1995, when it arrived as the replacement for the Renault 19. Across several generations of hatchbacks, saloons, and estate cars, the model became a familiar sight on European roads. In 2021, the manufacturer began a new era for the badge with the electric Megane E-Tech crossover.

With the next generation scheduled to hit the roads in 2028, Renault aims to broaden the car's appeal across a wider range of uses. By combining extended electric range, competitive pricing, and advanced on-board systems, the French carmaker hopes to mount a strong challenge to the Tesla Model Y in Europe's evolving electric vehicle market.
