Gladiator 2 cinematographer John Matheson criticized Ridley Scott. He said on the DocFix podcast that the director had changed, becoming “lazy” and “impatient.”
According to Matheson, the filmmaker is now trying to finish work on projects faster. Allegedly, Scott started using multiple cameras in filming instead of a single camera as he had done before. Therefore, the director pays less attention to details and, according to the cameraman, this negatively affects the outcome of the work.
“He’s quite impatient, so he tries to take in as much as possible at once. This isn’t very good for camera work because light can only be placed from one angle. If you look at his early films, frame depth was an important part of lighting. “He won’t be working with a lot of cameras, but he wants to get it over with,” Matheson said.
The cameraman added that Ridley Scott even left his shooting equipment in the frame and that any extra details were “covered up” in post-production. According to him, the director stopped adjusting the composition of the shot in advance. “It’s really lazy. Now it all comes down to the elements of computer graphics: they remove unnecessary details left in the frame by cameras, microphones, hanging stage elements, shadows on the sticks. On the set of Gladiator 2 they just said, “Okay, we’ll clean this up.”
In addition to Gladiator 2, John Matheson also directed the first Gladiator, Hannibal, Kingdom of Heaven, Robin Hood and other films for Ridley Scott.
Gladiator 2 was released abroad on November 22. The main role in the drama was played by Paul Mescal. Along with him, Joseph Quinn, Barry Keoghan and Denzel Washington starred in the film. The director had previously said that he was working on the script of the third episode of Gladiator.
It was previously known that Timothée Chalamet was in contention for the lead role in Gladiator 2. But Ridley Scott watched Normal People with Paul Mescal and changed his mind.
