Cher continues to reveal her secrets in the pages of her acclaimed memoirs. However, so far only one volume of the singer’s memoirs has been published.
This time, the star announced the name she was given at birth. She herself learned about him only when she decided to get rid of her ex-husband’s surname. Before this, the icon believed her name was Sherilyn. “My mother didn’t know what to say to me, but the nurse insisted she answer. Then my mom said, “Lana Turner is my favorite actress and her little girl’s name is Cheryl. My mom’s name is Linda, what about Sherilyn?” – Page Six Excerpts from Cher’s memoirs.
The singer, born in 1946, believed that was her name, but government officials mistakenly wrote her as “Cheryl” on her birth certificate. The truth came out in 1979 when he decided to change his surname. In response, Cher’s mother, Georgia Holt, called for a break. The late actor said about this issue, “I was just a young kid and I was in a lot of pain.”
After all this, the star decided to keep the name “Cher”. She gave up not only the “extra” letters, but also four surnames: her father John Paul Sarkisian, her stepfather Gilbert LaPierre, and ex-husbands Gregg Allman and Sonny Bono.
“To me, that’s better than having people wonder whether they should call me Ms. Allman, Ms. Bono, Ms. Bono Allman, Ms. Cher,” she explained in an archived interview on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson.
In previously published chapters of her memoirs, Cher talked about the most depressive period of her life. This happened during an unsuccessful marriage with singer Sonny Bono.
