A fungus featured in the post-apocalyptic TV series The Last of Us could lead to a revolutionary cancer treatment, scientists say in a FEBS Letters study. In the project, the Cordyceps fungus takes over people and turns them into zombies.
Scientists from the University of Nottingham say that this type of fungus can actually save lives thanks to the presence of a powerful chemical that can prevent the growth of cancer cells. They found that Cordycepin disrupted cell growth signals; It’s a discovery that could lead to the development of new anti-cancer drugs that are less harmful to healthy tissue.
“Our data confirm that cordycepin is a leading compound in anticancer drug development. “We have been investigating the effects of Cordycepin on a range of diseases for several years, and with each step, we are getting closer to understanding how it could be used as an effective treatment,” the researchers write.
The Last of Us project is based on the video game of the same name. The series takes place in a post-apocalyptic world full of zombies: Smuggler Joel and girl Ellie try to find an antidote against a deadly virus. This fall, HBO debuted the official trailer for the series’ sequel.
