The 78-year-old Twin Peaks director suffers from emphysema, a chronic lung disease that causes shortness of breath. David Lynch admitted that his incurable disease was caused by his bad habit – smoking. He explained how he felt now.
Lynch said smoking was an important part of his life. “For me, that was part of being an artist and a director,” he said. The Twin Peaks creator admitted he’s tried quitting “many times” over the years.
Even after he was diagnosed with emphysema in 2020, he continued this habit for another two years. “I saw a warning: “If you don’t quit, you will die in a week. I could barely move without losing my breath. “Leaving was my only option,” Lynch shared.
Today, a filmmaker cannot move without an oxygen mask to help him breathe fully. David Lynch, who admitted the price he paid for smoking was high, said he had “no regrets” but wanted others to learn from his experience. “I really wanted to convey this message to people: Think about it. You can throw things that end up killing you,” People quoted the director as saying.
Now David Lynch lives mostly at home for fear of contracting an infection that could worsen his illness. Although the director says he wants to direct remotely in the future, this makes it impossible to work on set.
David Lynch’s last feature film was 2006’s Inland Empire, and his main theatrical project was the third season of 2017’s Twin Peaks. He has continued to produce web series, short films and music videos, including his recent collaboration with singer Chrystabell.
